Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is a dangerous medical condition caused by a clot that forms in the deep veins of the body. It is most common in the legs and can be life-threatening if it spreads to areas such as the lungs.
Pain or tenderness in the leg, redness or discoloration of skin, swelling in one leg, along with general fatigue are all signs of DVT. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately as prompt treatment is essential for a good prognosis.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a circulatory condition in which plaque made up of cholesterol and other fatty substances builds up in your arteries, reducing the amount of oxygen-rich blood flowing to your limbs. This condition can cause pain, numbness, and difficulty walking. It puts individuals at greater risk for heart attack and stroke because it's typically an indication of overall poor health.
PAD usually starts off with no obvious signs or symptoms, making it difficult to detect until more advanced stages. If identified early on though, lifestyle modifications such as quitting smoking and increasing physical activity will help reduce its effects.
Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged, twisted, and swollen veins that can form anywhere in the body. Although most common in the legs, they can also form in the esophagus and the spermatic cord.
Common symptoms include aches and pains, visible varicose veins that can be seen on the surface of skin, a tingling sensation in affected areas, discoloration of skin, and ulcers around the ankles or feet.
Vascular malformations are abnormal patterns of development of the blood vessels that can range from minor deformities to complicated birth defects. These can be congenital, meaning present at birth, or slowly form and progress over time.
They occur when the walls of the vessels lack internal elasticity, allowing them to overexpand and strain until they burst, causing bleeding outside and within tissues. Vascular malformations often require multimodal treatment with surgical intervention.
