Is It Safe for Teenagers to Get Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an affordable, painless, and noninvasive way to improve the appearance of your face. The procedure can be a great way to boost confidence and jump-start a healthy skin care routine with fresh, glowing skin. Teenagers are increasingly looking for more advanced ways to care for their delicate skin, but is it safe or appropriate for teens to get microdermabrasion?

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is the exfoliation and removal of dead skin and impurities using a machine. Tiny glass beads painlessly remove the top layers of skin, which are then vacuumed away. Microdermabrasion is chemical-free and gentle. There is no downtime after the procedure, though there may be some slight redness and sensitivity for a day or two. Gentle moisturizer and makeup may be applied right away.

More than one session is normally recommended to achieve the best results. The skin cells on your face are renewed by your body every 30 days on average, so the effects of microdermabrasion are not permanent. In the hands of a physician or skilled aesthetician, microdermabrasion can be part of an overall skin care plan to improve the health and appearance of facial skin.

Who Can Get Microdermabrasion?

It is suitable for people of all skin types and most ages. There is no specific age range for microdermabrasion set by most dermatologists, and teens can definitely benefit from the same effects experienced by everyone who undergoes the treatment. However, there are a few contraindications for getting microdermabrasion that you should know if considering the procedure for your teen.

Who Should Not Get Microdermabrasion?

Patients Taking Isotretinoin

Due to an increased risk of scarring, patients taking the anti-acne drug isotretinoin should wait up to 6 months from when they last took the medication before getting microdermabrasion, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Patients With Severe Hormonal Acne

Although there is no official age requirement for teens to undergo the procedure, hormonal changes can make severe acne more likely. If there are severe lesions or open sores, treatment to help these heal is needed before the skin should be exfoliated.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Exfoliation is a great way to refresh your skin. Because microdermabrasion goes deeper than at-home skin care, you can expect more dramatic results – especially with many milder skin imperfections:

  • More even complexion
  • Fading of dark spots or mild scars from acne
  • Improvement of mild acne
  • Smaller pores
  • Radiant skin

Since acne is a very common skin problem for teens, the deep exfoliation and removal of dirt and dead skin cells that microdermabrasion provides is a natural choice. It helps treat existing acne and prevent future outbreaks by removing blackheads and particles that block pores and cause flare-ups.

Among its many benefits, microdermabrasion is effective in treating mild acne scarring. For more severe scarring, your doctor may recommend stronger treatments like chemical peels or lasers.
