Unexpected Things That You Didn’t Know Botox Could Treat

Many people are unaware that Botox injections are not only used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, but that it also used as a treatment for those who suffer from chronic pain, among other things. In the cosmetic world, Botox is known for its ability to smooth out lines and wrinkles in the forehead, eyes, and brow area. However, evidence has shown Botox to be a versatile and effective treatment for pain control, among other things. Recently, Botox made it on the cover of Time Magazine, stating that this procedure is on the rise, highlighting it as being much more dynamic than just a wrinkle erasing tool.

Botox (also known as Botulinum toxin) is a neurotoxic protein, and was considered to be dangerous at one point. It has now been proven to be a very safe and effective drug that can not only make you aesthetically beautiful, but greatly improve a person’s quality of life as well. So, other than being known to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, what else can Botox possibly be used for?

1.      Relieving Pain: Botox injections can be a versatile and effective treatment for pain control, especially for nerve and back pain. Pain management with Botox injections allows physicians to effectively treat many forms of chronic pain, most commonly, for those who suffer from headaches and migraines.

2.      Excessive Sweating: Those who suffer from a condition called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can benefit from Botox injections. If you find yourself soaked and have to constantly change your shirt due to excessive underarm sweat, Botox injections can help those who sweat four times more than normal. The Botox blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that activate your sweat glands, helping you stay dry and not embarrassed anymore.

3.      Treating Depression: More evidence has been coming to the forefront about how Botox can help people suffering from depression, which affects nearly 350 million people in the United States. A recent American Psychiatric Association conference in Germany discussed information about how Botox eases symptoms of depression. As our emotions are expressed by our facial muscles, when the brain sends feedback or signals to the face to reinforce those emotions. When Botox has been injected into targeted areas above the nose and between the eyebrows, positive mood changes have been seen in patients who suffer from depression and anxiety symptoms.

4.      Overactive Bladder: Overactive bladder is when the muscle in the bladder wall and pelvic floor are weakened, causing a sudden urge to urinate that you can’t control. Often, this causes the urine to leak out involuntarily, which is referred to as incontinence. Just like the neurotoxin can be used to paralyze portions of your face to smooth away wrinkles, an overactive bladder can also benefit from this, so urine does not leak out involuntarily.
